Assembly Bill 540

Assembly Bill 540, or AB 540, is a state law that allows undocumented students and out-of-state U.S. citizens in California to pay in-state tuition at the public colleges and universities if:

  • Attended California H.S. for 3 years or more
  • Graduates from California H.S. or obtains the G.E.D.

To become and "AB540" student, you just have to do the following:

  • Register at a college or university in CA.
  • Ask, and fill out an Affidavit form, form the admissions office. This form is to confirm that you are not a non-resident, and that you will apply for adjustment or status as soon as you can.

AB 540 does not:
  • Provide Financial Aid
  • Provide legal status to students
  • Does not place you in danger to get deported
